Kroger debuts meal kits

The Kroger Co. is testing its new meal kits in several stores in Greater Cincinnati. The Cincinnati-based supermarket chain is calling the kits Prep + Pared.

Prices for kits, including Moroccan Inspired Spring Vegetables, Japanese Inspired Beef Bowl, Chimichurri Steak and Chicken Enchiladas Rojas, are about $14 and come with a recipe and every ingredient to make a meal for two.

Kroger, perhaps, is watching the success that Blue Apron is having with meal kits. According to Bloomberg, New York-based Blue Apron doubled its revenue in 2016, bringing in between $750 million and $1 billion in revenue.

Blue Apron, which sends subscribers a box of ingredients each week to cook at home, ships 8 million meals monthly. Blue Apron costs $9.99 per person, per meal or $59.94 weekly.

Kroger has placed videos detailing Prep + Pared on its YouTube channel.
