Roche Bros. reaches milestone with branded sustainable bags

5/26/2017

Wellesley, Mass.-based Roche Bros. understands that the grocery bags a retailer gives its customers are an important part of its brand. This month, the chain handed a customer the 5 millionth Roche Bros.-branded ECOgrade bag, a non-plastic grocery bag made from organic material and minerals, the bag’s manufacturer, GXT Green Inc., stated in a press release.

ECOgrade bags are photodegradable, which means that they will begin to degrade in 20 days and will fully degrade within 240 days from exposure to sunlight, according to the manufacturer. The bags are priced competitively with standard plastic and are also recyclable, the company maintains.

“We have been pleased with the performance, price and value of the GXT Green ECOgrade bags,” said Richard Ordway, director of facilities and maintenance at Roche Bros, which began using the bags in 2016 and has steadily increased their use. “They’ve proven to be a key element of our commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainability. And when customers even notice a difference, we hear consistently how much they like the ECOgrade bags.”
