Supervalu buys Central Grocers’ Illinois distribution center

Eden Prairie, Minn.-based Supervalu Holdings has agreed to purchase bankrupt Central Grocers’ 1,000,000-square-foot distribution center in Joliet, Ill., for $61 million, according to an article by Greg Trotter in today’s Chicago Tribune.

“Consumers likely will notice a greater variety of store-branded items in grocery stores previously served by Central Grocers, which operated as a wholesaler for more than 400 independent stores in the Chicago area,” Trotter reported.

Supervalu brands include Essential Everyday, Wild Harvest, Stone Ridge Creamery and the Super Chill beverage line.
